Hakanai sonzai

Acquisition of 6 photographs by Pierre-Elie de Pibrac

Following the success of the exhibition "Ephemeral portrait of Japan: Pierre-Elie de Pibrac Photographs" in 2023, the musée Guimet adds to its contemporary photograph collection artwork from the series "Hakanai Sonzai" and "Mono no aware".

Portraits by Pierre-Elie de Pibrac are deeply anchored in their subject’s personal experience. The color series "Hakanai Sonzai » favors images evoking especially strong stories: the isolation of a hikikomori, the sacrifices a young man made for his community, the intimacy of a woman with death. They also all deal with the relationships (close or loose) between generations: a daughter and her father, a young man and his older neighbors, a woman at the twilight of her life.

Also displayed during the exhibition, a black and white series "Mono no aware", showcases the central theme of the place of nature in the human experience: the marks left by an earthquake on a landscape, the domestication of plants and the discreet presence of natural elements in the artificial urban landscape.

Six photographs join the museum’s collections, four of which with the support of the Société des Amis du Musée Guimet.
